Name: Neisi J.
Location: Long Beach, CA
Ethnicity/Nationality/Race: Afro Latinx
My name is Neisi and I’m a part time performance artist and part time sacred business owner. I’ve dealt with eating disorders since elementary and my weight has constantly been fluctuating since. It’s been a tough time accepting my body for what it is and what it does and doesn’t want when it does and doesn’t want it. Growing up I ate so much because I was constantly frowned upon for my small figure by my own family but I was still barely ever to gain weight. Eating is almost never on my own time. I have to Medicate myself with herb just to be able to eat a full meal now. Slowly I’m now learning the way my body works and all the signs it gives me. It’s not easy feeling your own body is against you. But for all of us struggling, we are stronger than our bodies allow us to feel.
How has Beating Eating Disorders helped you?
I followed your insta on my old account and I use to scroll through the images almost daily to get myself through and understand I’m not alone. I’m so happy I found you guys again today.
Where are you in your recovery journey?
Learning every day. Accepting myself in every way. I’m at a point where I’m learning not to hate my body for what it does to me, but rather feeding it with compassion and understanding for all it has been through.
What are your future recovery oriented goals?
I want to get to a point where I don’t have to depend on medicating myself in order to eat a full meal. I plan to eat healthy and eat when my body asks to be fed and not ignoring it’s needs.
What is the most helpful thing someone has said to you? What has been the most harmful?
Helpful: “Self forgiveness is the greatest chemical taste your body and mind can experience”
Harmful: “You’re too skinny, it’s NOT normal!”
Is there anything else you would like to add that you want people to know?
Keep on holding on. Each and every one of us are capable of self love and wellness. Do not give up, we need each other.
