Well, it’s here. And you made it! The end of one year and the beginning of another. A flip of the page. The calendar a year higher. A time to look back, and a time to plan for the future. And most of all, a time to celebrate. Yes…CELEBRATE!
YOU. ARE. HERE!!!!! That alone is a HUGE victory worthy of celebration. If for no other reason, celebrate! It was a tough year. No denying that. There were a lot of ups and downs. Doubt, fear, anxiety and even depression haunted you, seemingly at every turn, or at least every time you thought you were making headway. But look! Hold out your hands in front of you. Turn them over, one side and then the other. Breathe in the air. Exhale. See? Proof! You are a LOT stronger than you give yourself credit for. You faced every hurdle, and though you may have knocked it over or banged your shin against it, you got over it. And you continued on. SO CELEBRATE!
You may find yourself feeling nostalgic, wanting to isolate, pull in, justify it as ‘me time’, exhausted from surviving the holidays, or fighting to do more than survive. Self care is important, but don’t let yourself disappear for the wrong reasons. When the party is going and you want to bolt, challenge yourself to start a conversation and ask someone what they would identify as the highlight of their year. Be prepared to get the same question but have the answer ready! As you reflect, smile….and celebrate. This is your chance to brag on you. It could be ‘I fought for myself this year and I won that round’ or it could be ‘I struggled with some things and I made it through.’ As vague or specific as you want to be, either way you beat the isolation monster as you engage with someone else in that moment of temptation. Again, you are stronger than you think. SO CELEBRATE!
When the clock strikes midnight and they start singing ‘that song’ and everyone toasts whatever….celebrate. The year is in the history books. And you are still writing your story. Even though you may not feel like it, when the fireworks go off, think of them as a celebration of YOU! No one else may realize it, but they are watching a celebration of you…your courage, your strength, your commitment. You have a great foundation upon which to build for the next year. What will be your next brick? When you know, write it down, work on it, and CELEBRATE! Because you’re still here, you have MUCH to offer, you are valuable, and you are worth celebrating!
There was a song by the Kids from Fame back in the 80s called “Life is a Celebration.” Maybe this can be your new year song.
“I was lost on a winding road, I thought that life had nothing left to give
And then you came and showed me that just to live
Was the greatest gift of all
Life is a celebration, Lord I’m gonna celebrate…so come on now and celebrate, celebrate, Life is a celebration, Look it’s a revelation, So celebrate now, celebrate life!” – from “Life is a Celebration” (Kids From Fame)
